An encampment that offers visitors a living history experience
of one of the most turbulent times in American History.

Saturday May 21st
Encampment is open to the public from 10 am - 5 pm. Throughout the day participate in carriage rides, tinsmithing, blacksmithing, broom making, cavalry trooper exhibit, surgical presentations, U.S. Naval Landing Party program, life of the soldier encampment program including recruiting station and military drills. In addition, meet famous personalities from the period, enjoy children’s games, visit a sutlery, march to the beat of the fife and drum, discuss history with noted authors, and take in the surroundings of an historic mid-19th century setting.

Program highlights:

  • 11 am - “Romance Versus Reality: The Common Soldier’s Experience in the
    American Civil War” (Pewter Shop)
  • 12 pm - Encampment Sing Out with the 77th Balladeers, Irish Volunteers
    And Iron Jacks
  • 1 pm - “Through the Eye of the Needle: The American Civil War from a Woman’s Perspective” (Pewter Shop)
  • 2 pm - Civil War Horsemanship: Cavalry Trooper Demonstration
  • 3 pm - Skirmish including musket and artillery firing. (Encampment area)
  • 4 pm - “My Spirit Sings: Tales of Harriet Tubman” (Encampment area
  • 4:30 pm - Kim & Reggie Harris
  • 5 – 7 pm - Dinner at the Pavilion with music by the 77th NY Balladeers, Irish Volunteers and Iron Jacks during dinner
  • 7 pm - War Concert & Ball with Carolyn Evans (Sojourner Truth), Kim & Reggie Harris, Jay Ungar & Molly Mason. Eric Hollman, caller.

 

Sunday May 22nd
On Sunday May 22nd from 10 am – 4 pm join us for “Armed Forces Appreciation Day” at Ashokan Center Free admission to all active military personnel, veterans, reenactors and their families as we honor and thank them for their service.

Program highlights:

  • 11 am - "The Essential Jefferson Davis" A portrayal by Bill Lonecke of the life and times of one of the most complex and controversial figures in American History. Mr. Lonecke, a social studies teacher at Margaretville CSD, is a member of the Civil War Heritage Foundation and Windham Historical Society.
  • 12 pm - Encampment Sing Out
  • 1 pm - Armed Forces Appreciation Day Ceremony including Presentation of the Colors, the Star Spangled Banner, an Invocation, a Visit and Remarks by General U.S. Grant and President Lincoln, and closing musical selections including Taps, The Battle Hymn of the Republic and Auld Lang Syne.
  • 2 pm - Cavalry Demonstration
  • 3 pm - Skirmish
  • Ice Cream Social & finale follow the 3 pm Skirmish
